چکیده

This paper discusses the use of a domain-indendent, sharable ontology for the formal representation of engineering design knowledge, called YMIR. The central concept in YMIR is that of a primitive generic system model which represents the basic dependencies between the behaviour and the form of a technical system. We believe that it is important to integrate existing formal approaches in the diierent engineering disciplines as much as possible in modelling design knowledge. To this end, we explain how these primitive generic components can be deened in terms of System Theory. Engineering design, in this context, consists of synthesising complex speciic system models by combining and instantiating more elementary generic system models, which in turn are built from primitive models. Furthermore, we present the structures in YMIR for representing knowledge about this synthesis process in terms of system models. Based on these knowledge structure concepts, a basic inferencing strategy for the synthesis of technical systems is proposed.

The Neutral Representation Project

The evolving complexity of many modern artifacts, such as aircraft, has led to a serious fragmentation of knowledge among software systems required for their design and manufacture. In the case of aircraft design, views of the same generic design knowledge are redundantly encoded in multiple software systems, each system using its own idiosyncractic ontology, and each system containing that kno...

The Role of Common Ontology in Achieving Sharable, Reusable Knowledge Bases

Although AI research and commercial system development depend on bodies of formally represented knowledge that are expensive and diicult to construct, current knowledge base design does not support the accumulation or reuse of such knowledge. This paper presents a strategy for building libraries of sharable, reusable knowledge in which common ontologies play a central role as a knowledge coupli...

Design Knowledge Representation: An Ontological Perspective

We present a preliminary high-level formal theory, grounded on knowledge representation techniques and foundational ontologies, for the uniform and integrated representation of the different kinds of (qualitative and quantitative) knowledge involved in the designing process. We discuss the conceptual nature of engineering design by individuating and analyzing the involved notions. These notions...

Exploring Semantic Web technologies for ontology-based modeling in collaborative engineering design

This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using the Semantic Web paradigm, particularly the Web Ontology Language (OWL), for domain-specific engineering design knowledge representation in a multi-agent distributed design environment. Ontology-based modeling to the engineering design knowledge on the Semantic Web is proposed as a prelude to the meaningful agent communication and knowledge re...
